Early Orthodontic Treatment: Why Age 7 Matters
By Dr. Robert Bryan, DDS, MS
When most people think of orthodontics, they picture teenagers with braces. What many parents don’t realize is that the foundation for a healthy, confident smile often begins much earlier.
At Dr. Bob Bryan Orthodontics, we follow the guidelines of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), which recommends that children receive their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. An early visit does not necessarily mean braces or treatment right away. Instead, it provides an opportunity for early awareness, proactive monitoring, and timely intervention when needed. Dr. Bryan is also a pediatric dentist, which offers an additional level of expertise in early treatment.
Why Age 7 Is the Ideal Starting Point
Around age 7, children typically have a combination of primary (baby) teeth and permanent teeth, while their jaws are still actively growing. This creates a unique window of opportunity for identifying and addressing certain orthodontic concerns.
By evaluating children at this stage, we can monitor jaw growth, tooth eruption, and bite development and determine whether interceptive orthodontic treatment could be beneficial while growth is still on our side.
Early evaluation can also identify concerns that may not be obvious to parents, including crowding, crossbites, open bites, excessive spacing, protruding teeth, or differences in jaw development.
A Modern Approach to Early Orthodontic Treatment
Our office is predominantly Invisalign-based, especially when it comes to early intervention. Today’s orthodontic treatment offers more comfortable, flexible, and child-friendly options than ever before.
For younger patients who require early treatment, we often utilize Invisalign First, a system specifically designed for growing children. Invisalign First allows us to gently guide tooth alignment and support developing arches while accommodating both primary and permanent teeth.
In cases where expansion is needed, we may recommend:
- Fixed palatal expanders
- Removable Invisalign Palatal Expanders (IPE)
The type of expansion used depends entirely on each child’s individual needs, growth pattern, and level of development. Our goal is always to select the most effective and comfortable option for long-term success.
The Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
Investing in Your Child’s Future Smile
Early orthodontic treatment is about much more than aesthetics. It can play an important role in supporting healthy oral development and addressing potential orthodontic concerns before they become more complicated.
Benefits of early evaluation and, when appropriate, treatment may include:
- Timely issue detection: Identifying concerns such as crowding, bite problems, or jaw discrepancies early allows for proactive treatment and monitoring.
- Guiding growth and development: Early evaluation provides an opportunity to influence tooth alignment and, in certain circumstances, jaw development while a child is still growing.
- Reducing the risk of complications: Addressing certain orthodontic problems early may help prevent them from becoming more complex later.
- Preventing injury: Children with significantly protruding front teeth may have a greater risk of accidental chipping or injury.
- Supporting speech development: Certain bite issues, including some open bites, can be associated with speech difficulties or tongue-thrusting habits.
- Improving facial balance: In appropriate cases, guiding dental and jaw development can contribute to balanced facial development.
- Space preservation: Early intervention can help maintain or create space for incoming permanent teeth, potentially reducing future crowding.
- More efficient future treatment: In some cases, early treatment can simplify orthodontic treatment later and contribute to a more predictable overall result.
A Simple First Step
An orthodontic evaluation around age 7 provides valuable insight into whether treatment is needed right away, whether a child would benefit from early intervention, or whether continued observation is the best approach.
Not every child needs early treatment—and that’s important to understand. Sometimes the best treatment plan is simply to monitor growth and tooth development and begin treatment at the appropriate time.
With today’s Invisalign-based solutions, advanced technology, and customized treatment options, early orthodontic care can be both effective and child-friendly.
At Dr. Bob Bryan Orthodontics, we are proud to combine modern technology, early intervention, and personalized care to help children in our community grow into healthy, confident smiles.
