Hydro-Extrusions North America has made a significant $100 million investment to modernize its Cressona plant, marking the next phase in its evolution. The plant now hosts a $50 million, 3,000-ton extrusion press with advanced automation and a new recycling facility, increasing the plant’s recycling capacity to 270,000 tons annually—the largest for any Hydro facility.
The upgrades, aimed at improving productivity and sustainability, include replacing two old presses with the new one, which boosts efficiency by 36%. Hydro's commitment to sustainability aligns with its goal to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The new recycling operation will produce an additional 110 million pounds of aluminum billets yearly, supporting industries like automotive and construction. The plant remains a major employer in the region, with over 1,100 workers, and the investment ensures job security despite automation. Local officials and business leaders celebrated the modernization, which is expected to have a positive economic impact on Schuylkill County. The project also involved significant collaboration with local construction companies and the recycling of old plant materials.
Hydro’s long-term vision for the plant highlights its role in the green economy, with aluminum recycling central to reducing energy use and emissions. The Cressona plant is now poised for another 80 years of operation, building on its rich history and contributing to both local and global sustainability goals.
