Green Plant of the Year: Keystone Potato Products Takes Sustainability to New Levels

Keystone Potato Products has been awarded the 2024 Green Plant of the Year by Food Processing Magazine. Each year, readers nominate a facility that demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable practices in food and beverage manufacturing.

To reduce waste, Keystone was established in 2005 to process off-grade potatoes into products like flakes and flour, effectively generating value from what would otherwise be discarded. The facility also produces various potato products, helping farmers manage off-grade produce and ensuring every potato has a purpose. Aiming for sustainability, the company partnered with a nearby landfill to utilize methane gas as an energy source for its dehydration processes. Additionally, it taps into contaminated water from abandoned coal mines, treating it for use in food processing and then returning cleaned water to local watersheds.

Keystone not only focuses on minimizing waste and enhancing sustainability but also aims to innovate in packaging. They are exploring biodegradable bags for their fresh potatoes, which break down without contaminating recycling streams. This commitment to environmentally friendly packaging complements their overall sustainability goals. As they look to the future, they emphasize the importance of continuous improvement and adaptation, ensuring that their operations not only benefit the business but also contribute positively to the environment and the community. David Masser, current CEO of the Masser Family of Companies, says Keystone is “the shining star in our family of companies from an innovation perspective,” based on the future ahead for the products it creates.

Keystone seeks to continuously enhance its sustainability efforts, exploring the potential use of byproducts from its water treatment process and investigating renewable energy options. The company’s commitment to eco-friendly practices positions it as a leader in sustainable food processing in the eastern U.S., with plans for future growth and innovation.
