On Saturday, May 11, The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission, Joe Stolarick, and The City of Pottsville presented an official state historical marker commemorating Pottsville native, Allan P. Jaffe. In 1961, Allan and his wife Sandra (Smolen) Jaffe established Preservation Hall in New Orleans, LA. This venue aims to preserve the culture and sound of jazz music and celebrate jazz's history for every generation. Preservation Hall has been recognized all over the world from The New York Times to the King of Thailand. It is widely known as a must-visit destination in New Orleans. Jaffe also helped in establishing the Preservation Hall Band in 1963, whose success quickly manifested and resulted in tours with various artists around the world. He played bass horn for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on multiple tours and recordings.
Jaffe received his music education in Pottsville then attended Valley Forge Military Academy and the Wharton School of Finance. Before operating Preservation Hall, Jaffe worked in his father's store, Harry Jaffe's Pottsville Wallpaper & Paint Company. Jaffe accredits his time working in his father's store in Pottsville to his success in managing Preservation Hall. Under his leadership, Preservation Hall made a major contribution to American music by helping to revive traditional New Orleans jazz and present it to international audiences.
The ceremony featured remarks from Pottsville Mayor Dave Clews, J. Robert Zane, Esq. (President of the Schuylkill County Historical Society), William V. Lewis (Commissioner of PHMC), and Jaffe's second son, Ben Jaffe (Creative Director of Preservation Hall Jazz Band). Joe Stolarick was the Historical Marker Sponsor.
