Schuylkill
County has made the transition from being totally dependent on Anthracite
coal production to an economic base that is balanced between manufacturing
and service type employers.
The heritage of Anthracite coal has brought a work ethic
to the labor force that is unparalleled anywhere in America. This commitment
to a fair day's work, coupled with an increasingly skilled workforce,
has brought success and profitability to progressive employers in the
manufacturing and service sectors.
Schuylkill County's employment base is home to several
Fortune 500 companies who have found the workforce to be both productive
and loyal. The county's strategic location in the world's most lucrative
market - the Northeast Megalopolis - offers distinct business advantages
when coupled with the excellent interstate highway network which traverses
the county.
The county's employment mix offers a diversified workforce
that has increased productivity for employers moving into Schuylkill
County from other locations. The major industrial employers by manufacturing
category include: apparel/textile; chemical and allied products; fabricated
and primary metals; lumber and wood products (modular homes); paper
and allied products; plastics; printing and publishing; stone, glass
and concrete; and warehousing/distribution. Overall, Schuylkill County
ranks in the top 10 counties in Pennsylvania in manufacturing jobs as
a percentage of the entire workforce.
Although there are a number of industrial and economic
development organizations in Schuylkill County, the majority of economic
development projects have been coordinated through the Schuylkill
Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO) and the Schuylkill County
Industrial Development Authority (SCIDA). The offices are professionally
staffed by full-time employees who focus on packaging financial, site
development and job training programs. New building sites are available
at business parks located throughout the county.
The Highridge Business Park, comprised of more than 1,800
acres straddling Interstate 81, represents a major opportunity for business
expansion. Existing buildings are available with a potential for renovation
to meet specific requirements.
Completely coordinated job training and workforce
skill development are offered through: Alvernia
College, Lehigh Carbon
Community College, McCann
School of Business & Technology, Pennsylvania
CareerLink - Schuylkill Centers, the Schuylkill
